台東市元宵節一年一度的神輿祈福遊境活動迄今已有近六七十年的歷史，只要是在地台東人都曾親身參與或感受過這活動熱鬧氣份，也是台東每年最為熱鬧的節日，也吸引不少來台東觀賞的人潮。此一具有傳統鄉土文化及歷史性活動，皆由民間團體及廟宇主動發起，每年約有70-80支的隊伍參與。並以祈求本縣能風調雨順、國泰民安、五穀豐收與合境平安為其特色。近年來，在公部門等單位協助推廣，配多元傳統民俗活動的展現，更突顯出台東元宵活動的庶民精神與文化價值。
「炮轟寒單爺」民俗活動已有近百年歷史，而且是台東特有的民俗活動，近年來，「炮轟寒單爺」在台東市公所大力推動下，已成為全台每年「元宵節」民俗活動中，除了台北平溪的放天燈以及台南鹽水的射蜂炮之外，是最具特色，最令人震撼的元宵節主軸活動，也是全國注目的焦點好戲，「北天燈、南烽炮、東寒單」成為國內元宵節三大民俗活動。同時也獲得Discovery探索頻道、公共電視臺等國內外媒體的青睞，成功的將台東的「炮轟寒單爺」推銷出去。

由於臺東是全臺灣惟唯一一個轄內沒有工廠的縣市，所以空氣非常好，適合發展運動觀光，與鐵人三項運動委員會推動國際賽競賽，包含Challenge Taiwan和Ironman Taiwan運動競賽，運用國際運動觀光賽事帶動國際旅客和愛好運動的臺灣民眾前來臺東觀光；Ironman Taiwan去（2017）年舉辦的賽事，有37國近3,000人報名，是2016年參加人數的兩倍。而Challenge Taiwan的賽事有來自35國超過3,000人報名，臺東已為鐵人三項賽事的指定舉辦地，耀升為國際運動城市。

每個部落舉辦的豐年祭各有特色，短則一天，長則七天，是外人認識阿美文化的窗口。歌舞活動是豐年祭重要的一環，豐年祭歌舞分為男性專屬、女性專屬及男女合舞，各運用在不同場合；其中年輕男子擔綱的「勇士舞」，是以大幅度肢體擺盪，表現出齊一的戰鬥性，非常震撼。
